Today we visited Mayibuye Primary School in Tembisa township, Johannesburg, to discuss our BeatingBullies anti-bullying program with their principal and deputy. They're keen to implement it at the school, as bullying is a big issue for them, but sadly, as an underprivileged school, they don't have the funds. We're working on getting a company to sponsor the program for them.
What an incredible experience meeting the Mayibuye kids! When we were leaving, the kids were out for break, and they all flocked around us, giving us high-fives, fist-bumps and hugs - for all 20 minutes of their break! Take a look at the pic. I wish all kids were this spontaneous. I couldn't take the smile off my face, all the time wishing I had more arms to give more hugs! On Monday we took part in the 2015 Social Entrepreneurship Festival of Ideas pitching competition at the GIBS campus. Super-excited that BeatingBullies.com came 2nd! Big ups to our team for making this possible. Learnt a lot and met some great people. Well done to the other winners, some fantastic ideas and a big thanks to GIBS, LifeCo, the SAB Foundation and Standard Bank for a very well-organised event. It's great to see the incredible, world-changing ideas coming out of South Africa's social good space right now!
Last night we attended the TT100 awards dinner at the CSIR. Very excited that BeatingBullies.com was chosen as one of the Top 100 Technology companies in South Africa for 2014. Well done team! Thanks to everyone at TT100 for a fantastic experience. Great to see so much innovative, world-class tech coming of South Africa!
BeatingBullies.com chosen as finalist in Social Entrepreneurship Festival of Ideas competition20/11/2014 Today we took part in the Social Entrepreneurship Festival of Ideas pitching competition at the GIBS campus. Because of the social entrepreneurship focus, it was very different to any other elevator pitch competition we've participated in before. Super-excited that BeatingBullies.com was chosen as a Finalist. It was a fantastic experience and the prize money will help us finish our mobile app by early 2015. Well done to the other winners, some great ideas and a big thank you to GIBS, the SAB Miller Foundation and Standard Bank for a very well-organised event. Social good is such an incredible space to be in right now!
On 25-July we launched the BeatingBullies pilots at 2 private high schools King David Victory Park (KDVP) and King David Linksfield (KDL). We spoke to the high school learners at KDL yesterday and got some great feedback and ideas on how we can make BeatingBullies even better. Thanks everyone for your input!
All the best Colette On Saturday 30-Aug-2014 I mentored new start-ups at the Launch Weekend in Sandton. The energy was fantastic and we met some amazing start-ups, especially VotingMonkey.com. Here's the video about the Lean Start-up approach we've used at BeatingBullies.com (and the learnings compared to the opposite approach used at previous company MBAconnect.net). Thanks for Abu Bakr Cassim of VentureNetwork.co.za for making the video and Paul Smith and Justin Coetsee of Startup Cherry for organising this incredible event. All the best Colette During the past few months, we've been piloting BeatingBullies at King David Sandton, a local private primary school. The feedback has been very positive, both on the usefulness of the platform and the extra support such as the anti-bullying videos we show to schoolkids at assemblies. We've ironed out the few glitches we had at the beginning and it's been a great learning experience for everybody. Most importantly, the schoolchildren are reporting bullying safely and anonymously to the school principal, so that she can do something about it. So we know the model works! A big thank you to the KDS school principal who has been tremendously proactive and doing her utmost to stop bullying at her school. She has been instrumental in making this pilot a success.
We're now rolling out BeatingBullies to private primary schools around South Africa. We'll be starting a pilot at a few private high schools very soon. Watch this space! Hi everybody
A big thank you to technology writer and Finweek editor Willem Kempen for talking about BeatingBullies.com on RSG Radio yesterday. Listen to the podcast at http://t.co/Thatw1Y7ye (from 5:37min) All the best Colette Great news! Today we launched the pilot for BeatingBullies at King David Sandton, a private primary school in Johannesburg. So far the feedback has been very positive and one learner has already anonymously reported bullying to the school principal, Mrs Horwitz. She is incredibly proactive and really wants to help her learners fix their bullying problems, making her an ideal principal for our pilot. I'll keep you updated on how things go.
All the best Colette |
