STEP 1: All learners in the school are made aware of the URL or website address of your school-branded site. We provide you with marketing material that will encourage your learners to use the service to report bullying that they've witnessed or experienced.
STEP 2: Suppose that a learner at your school is aware of bullying activity. On your school’s anti-bullying site, the learner clicks on the “Report Bullying Now!” button, which opens up the BeatingBullies feedback system in a secure browser window.
STEP 3: The learner enters an email address so that the system can subsequently alert the learner about future responses. The learner can enter a gmail address or something similar as a further means to avoid identification.
STEP 4: The learner then describes the bullying activity that (s)he has witnessed or experienced. If needed, the learner can upload evidence (such as pictures, videos, etc.). This submission is anonymous.
STEP 5: A nominated authority figure at the school (the ‘reportee’) gets an alert from the BeatingBullies system saying there has been a new anti-bullying submission. This authority figure could be the school principal, the counsellor, or anyone else deemed appropriate.
STEP 6: The reportee logs in to the online system, views the learner’s submission and types a reply. This could be to obtain further information, to clarify certain issues, or simply to thank the learner for reporting the bullying. For example, the principal might type: “How long has this bullying been going on for?”, “Who is involved?”, etc.
STEP 7: The learner receives an email alert from the BeatingBullies system, saying there has been a response to his / her submission.
STEP 8: The learner logs in to the online system, views the reportee’s response and then chooses an anonymous nickname before responding. This back-and-forth conversation continues until the issue has been dealt with.
The process is illustrated in the diagram below.
IMPORTANT: THE LEARNER WILL ALWAYS BE HIDDEN AND THE PRINCIPAL WILL NEVER KNOW WHO HE OR SHE IS TALKING TO!
